MEMBER STORIES

INSPIRING STORIES FROM OUR MEMBERS

JOINED IN 2015

DAVE OLSON

Dave joined HFFA in 2015 with the goal of “keeping what I’ve got as long as I can” and has continuously gotten stronger. He’s worked out with us almost 300 times over the past 2 years.
According to Dave, “I was skeptical about getting a key to track my progress, but decided to try it. I quickly learned it is an easy way to keep a log. The key made it simple to learn my following stats: I have done 4528 sets, moved 3,125,910 lbs (1563 tons), at an average of 731 lbs per set. My average lbs moved per workout over the 2 years is 12330. However it was 11,620 lbs the first year and was 13,500 the second. HFFA is a great facility and we are lucky to have it.”

ROBERTA

Roberta has ridden 5,000 miles in just 11 months.
A long time ago, Roberta had a traumatic brain injury and a crushed ankle. After going through years of rehabilitation, she was told that she will improve but it will take a lot of hard work from her and no one else. This was a big change overnight.

Before she moved to NC, she came to check out the area. Her hotel gym was being remodeled so she was told about HFFA. Shortly after, we became her new gym. We had everything she needed and made her feel comfortable.

From 2011-2013, every step she took hurt & she did not want to live in constant pain. Even cycling outdoors was shortened due to the pain. 2014/15 she had her joints fused on both sides, causing her to be non-weight bearing for 2-3 months at a time with each procedure. During these months, she felt sorry for herself and ate a lot of sweets. Once she was released from the doctor’s care, she became active with activities of strength training and cycling & started eating clean. She has lost close to 30 lbs & is in better shape than when she moved her in 2011. She just keeps moving, and doesn’t look back.

RHONDA MCKEEL

My 50th birthday, August of 2015, was a turning point for me. It was the first step in being honest with myself about how out of shape I was and just how bad I felt physically. I promised myself that I would fight to take better care of myself and become a stronger person. The journey was slow to get moving, but really started to take shape with small diet changes in April 2016 when I weighed around 226 lbs.

In August 2016, right after my 51st birthday, I returned to the gym. Initially, I was only able to stay on the elliptical trainer, for about 12 minutes before becoming exhausted, and each day I went back, I challenged myself to just go a minute longer. On September 7, 2016, I was finally confidant enough to ask for some guidance at HFFA. I met with trainer, Brandon Tedder, to get a baseline assessment done, and create a fitness plan to assist me in reaching my goal of feeling better and getting stronger. At this point, I weighed 204.5 lbs., my blood pressure was 143/85, my BMI was 34.6, my percent body fat mass was 44.8%. The fitness plan is adjusted about every 8 weeks to keep me motivated and on track.

Today I weigh about 156 lbs., my blood pressure has dropped to around 126/72, my BMI is 25.1, my percent body fat mass is around 28%, and my resting heart rate is around 52 bpm. The benefit of feeling better is the most significant reward from this process.

I have learned that even the smallest changes toward a healthier lifestyle are significant and beneficial, and that this process will be a lifelong commitment. Today, my goals of what I want to look like, and desire to challenge myself continue to change. I want to prove to myself that age is just a number, and that I can continue to literally reshape who I am.
