CANADA GETS SWEEP AT HFFA'S SYNCHRO CHAMPIONSHIPS
Two words describe the outcome of the UANA Pan American Junior Synchronized Swimming Championships at Huntersville Family Fitness and Aquatics last weekend: Oh, Canada!
The Canadians swept every event in the competition for swimmers aged 18 or younger from a dozen other countries in North, Central and South America, and the Caribbean.
The most tightly contested event was also the most-anticipated: the team finals. The U.S. team actually outscored the Canadians with its routine, but Canada edged the Americans for the gold medal when the scores from the compulsory “Figures” competition were figured in. Colombia finished third to join the North American neighbors on the medal stand.
“Tonight’s performance was amazing,” Team USA Head Coach Kim Wurzel-LoPorto said of the United States’ team.
“It met and exceeded my expectations.”
In the solo category, Canada’s Chloe Isaac took home the gold medal. Team USA’s Madison Crocker was second and Colombia’s Monica Arango third.
In the duet division, Canada’s Annabelle Frappier and Emilia Kopcik took gold, with Team USA’s Crocker and Emily Dillon taking silver. The Colombians again took bronze with the team of Arango and Laura Marquez.
In the free combination routine, Canada bested Colombia for top honors.
