LOCAL DIVERS EARN NATIONAL RECOGNITION

HUNTERSVILLE, NC – While the Olympics drew most of the sports world’s attention over the past two weeks, some young local divers spent that time celebrating major victories of their own.

Members of Huntersville Family Fitness & Aquatics’ Carolina Diving Academy recently competed in two of the nation’s top diving competitions with excellent results:  the 2008 Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) National Diving Championships in Coral Springs, Fla., July 26 – Aug. 4; and the 2008 USA Diving Speedo Junior National Championships in The Woodlands, Tex., Aug. 6-10.

Following are the divers who competed and their results:
  • Ryan Hawkins, 17, of Charlotte, swept the AAU event, winning first place in every category for his age group:  platform, 1 meter, and 3 meter.  At the USA Diving junior nationals, he placed seventh on the platform, 11th on the 1 meter, and 12th on the 3 meter.
  • Blair (Whitney) Timberlake, 12, of Huntersville, also brought home a platform win from AAU nationals.  In addition, she placed fourth on the 1 meter and sixth on the 3 meter. She placed 19th on the 3 meter and 16th in the platform event at the U.S. junior nationals.
  • Sara Maleski, 12, of Waxhaw, placed fifth on the platform, tenth on the 1 meter, and ninth on the 3 meter at AAU nationals.  She finished 27th on the 3 meter at the U.S. junior nationals.
  • Ben Lane, 18, of Asheville, placed sixth in the 1-meter competition at AAU nationals. He did not compete in the U.S. junior nationals.
“I’m extremely proud of all our divers and their efforts at nationals this year,” said Aaron Hintz, director and diving coach for HFFA’s Carolina Diving Academy.  “National competition is the most demanding and stressful environment for any athlete, and our divers did extremely well.  Whether they medaled or not, the experience was invaluable to helping strengthen their competition skills.”
